SSA reminds Americans about identity protection

Home / SSA reminds Americans about identity protection

A recent article written by the Social Security Administration is reminding Americans of the SSA’s efforts to safely protect users’ identity when accessing the site or obtaining information over the phone. The administration acknowledges there may be situations and instances when your account may be compromised, such as domestic violence with a spouse, and your account may be accessed by those unauthorized to do so.

The administration takes pride in protecting your identity and has incorporated the Block Electronic Access service to their website and phone portals to protect their users. The resource allows registered users to block access to all records that could be accessed via the internet or phone. This means that under no circumstance, not even you can access these records through the website or phone. If your situation improves, you may eventually unblock the account.

Contrary to popular belief, your Social Security number is not set in stone. While you are given a Social Security number at birth if you are born in the United States, if your Social Security number is being used maliciously and you are endangered, the administration may assign you a new number.

The Social Security Administration is important to all Americans, and their many services, including their disability benefits options, help millions of Americans cope with life-altering serious injuries, illness and mental conditions by providing financial relief for those who are unable to work. If your disabling condition prohibits you from maintaining gainful employment, you may want to see if you qualify.
