MTA accident claims one life, another worker severely injured

Home / MTA accident claims one life, another worker severely injured

Many occupations in New York leave workers more prone to workplace accidents. Employees working in potentially hazardous conditions, such as construction sites or at railroad locations, are especially vulnerable, as the workplace cannot always account for freak accidents or situations susceptible to accidents. Unfortunately, this was the case for two MTA workers while at the job site as they worked on track repairs on the G line in Brooklyn last week. One worker was killed and another was injured when a train rounded the curve of a track and struck the workers, pinning them against the train. One worker died in the accident, the other was taken to New York Methodist Hospital in stable condition with injuries to his torso.

Specifics on the severity of the injury were not available, but it is not uncommon for serious workplace accidents to involve brain, spine or back injuries. Serious injuries may lead to permanent or long-term disabilities that leave a victim unable to work.

If it can be determined that a disabling injury is prohibiting a worker from seeking gainful employment for a year or longer, or is expected to end in death, the worker may be entitled to Social Security Disability benefits.

Although Social Security Disability benefits are not designed to fully cover an injured worker’s medical expenses or rehabilitation costs, the awarded monthly payments may be very helpful and will help fill the void that exists without a steady paycheck. If you have suffered a workplace injury that has left you seriously disabled and unable to work, you may want to see if you qualify for Social Security Disability benefits.
