Disabilities take a variety of different shapes. Some are mental, some are caused by illness, and still, some are physical, requiring people to rely on equipment like wheelchairs. When disabled individuals rely so heavily on a device to live, things can get very difficult if that device breaks. For Medicaid patients, a broken wheelchair or other devices can mean weeks of having to cope before anything is fixed or replaced.
A mother from Rego Park told the New York Daily News about the struggles she faced when dealing with Medicaid. Her 23-year-old son spends 16 hours a day in a specialized wheelchair. In October, the chair broke into two pieces. Despite the fact that her son relies on the wheelchair to get around, it took Medicaid more than a month to fix it.
Unfortunately, many people have experienced the difficulties that come with working with Medicaid. Fraught with paperwork and red tape, filing a claim for a piece of equipment to be fixed or replaced can be frustrating and time-consuming. Those who need to go through Medicaid may find want to consider seeking help from someone experienced in filing claims, whether it is an attorney or someone else.
The CEO of the International Center for the Disabled said that Medicaid’s shortage of resources contribute heavily to the amount of time it takes them to address people’s claims. They don’t have the money they need, which leaves those who rely on them to fix equipment stuck – sometimes literally.
Working with Medicaid is not always a good experience for those who need help quickly. However, it may help speed up the process to have an experienced attorney or other expert help ensure that you are filing the right paperwork. No one should have to live with broken equipment.
