Can the Compassionate Allowances list help you?

Many people in New York know how long it can take to get a response from the Social Security Administration about a request for disability benefits. It is why the SSA recommends people file a claim as soon as they know they will need Social Security disability. Some people, however, do not have time to waste when it comes to getting financial help. Fortunately for these people, the Compassionate Allowances list exists.

We wrote about the Compassionate Allowances list back in December, but now that we’re in a new year and may have some new readers, we thought it would be a good idea to revisit it. The Compassionate Allowances program was started in 2008. It is a list of conditions that are expedited through the approval process, so it would serve people well to find out of their conditions are on the list.

Currently, there are 200 conditions on the list, including some cancers and uncommon diseases. If you have one of these conditions, the SSA can usually process your claim and approve you within two weeks. For those who do not qualify for the Compassionate Allowances program, a claim review can take months.

The SSA has continued to update the Compassionate Allowances list as it sees fit. To date, almost 200,000 people have benefited from the expedited process, getting the benefits they need to continue receiving much-needed treatment.

Filing for disability benefits can be complicated, but it’s important to get everything right the first time. If your application is incomplete, you will not be approved. For help with an application or to learn more about the process, an experienced attorney can help.
