Actress Carrie Fisher dies following heart attack on flight

The Force has always been strong with Carrie Fisher, beloved actress and star from the original Star Wars trilogy of the 1970's and '80's, but this week Hollywood was left in mourning following the news that Fisher suffered a massive heart attack while on a flight from London to Hollywood and died later this week. Fisher reentered the spotlight last year after reprising her role as Princess Leia in the recent Star Wars: A Force Awakens film, which debuted last December, and has been touring while promoting her recently published memoir, which talks in depth about her battle with mental disorders, including bipolar disease

Fisher is candid about her mental health. In fact, her dog, Gary, has become a bit of a celebrity while touring with her. Gary, a service dog and one of her best friends, provided stability and emotional support in her life, said Fisher. Gary joined her while she travelled and spent her final days at Fisher's side in the hospital.

Both heart disease and bipolar disorder are among the Social Security Administration's listed conditions for their disability programs, including their Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI and Supplemental Security Income, or SSI.. To qualify, one must prove that the disability prevents a victim from maintaining gainful employment and that the condition is expected to last at least a year or end in death.

The Social Security Disability programs are designed to provide some financial relief to Americans suffering from severe disabilities. Although they are not designed to fully cover medical costs, they may help compensate for a victim's lost income while they fight their disability.
