Car accident injuries and how they affect victims' lives

Winter is here, and although we have been lucky thus far in the New York tri-state area when it comes to winter weather, we all know it's just around the corner. And with the snow and sleet and ice comes an increase in car accidents.

From statistics provided by the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 2.3 million people were injured in car crashes in 2014. And based upon the first half of 2015, those numbers may rise in 2015.

The Social Security Administration includes debilitating injuries as a qualifying disability for Social Security Disability Insurance if the disabling injury is expected to last at least a year or end in death. Among the injuries that qualify for the programs are traumatic brain injuries and neck, spine or back injuries. Many of these serious injuries require months or even years of rehabilitation and therapy, and in many cases, may lead to life-long disabilities. With lost work wages, medical care costs, rehabilitation, therapy, and prescriptions to cover the recovery and deal with pain, the financial burdens may reach a tipping point. That is where the Social Security disability programs come in.

Car accident victims with injuries requiring long-term care may be able to apply for either Social Security Disability Insurance benefits or Supplemental Security Income, depending on one's financial position and whether they have paid into the SSDI program. If a person's disabling injury qualifies, it may be in their best interest to apply for one of the programs that provide financial relief.
