Man uses blindness to excel in art

Living with disability is no easy feat, as many people in New York know. It is difficult to find a steady job and often makes day-to-day life more challenging. For these reasons, many people rely on Social Security disability benefits to help them meet financial needs during a temporary or permanent disability.

While many people see disability as a very negative thing, one man's story shows that some people are able to champion a disability by turning it into a strength.

The man was formerly employed to cut down trees that grew over power lines. Eventually, however, his job left him blind in one eye. He lost his job and eventually became homeless. He says that during his time living in a homeless shelter, he began drawing. He found that only being able to see out of one eye was an advantage -- he could "just draw the lines as I see them."

He had been artistic much of his life, but often channeled it through photography. Now, he's begun merging the two art forms and experimenting with free photography software at his local library. After the library's director noticed his work, she and others encouraged him to display his work for the community to see. His work is being exhibited at the library through the end of September.

Disability is rarely viewed as a positive thing, so it's refreshing to hear of someone who is able to take control of a disability and use it to succeed. Unfortunately, this scenario is not always possible for everyone. When disability prevents a person from working, Social Security Disability Insurance is an option. Speaking to an experienced SSD attorney may be beneficial.
