New York parents with disabled children should know SSD rules

Parents who have children with disabilities know that they face an entirely different set of challenges than other parents. Their children also face other challenges, especially when they reach adulthood. And in a struggling economy, those who live with a disability often have a more difficult time finding steady work than those who are not disabled. Because of this, it's important that parents know the ins and outs of securing Social Security disability benefits.

If someone who is 18 or older cannot work because of a disability, he or she may be eligible for Social Security disability benefits. For many people, these payments can mean the difference between getting by and struggling to meet basic needs. The application process for obtaining disability benefits, however, can be very complex. For this reason, parents may find it helpful to speak with an attorney who is well-versed in Social Security disability law.

Medical documents and detailed proof a person's disability are required, among other things, for a person to be approved for disability benefits, and it's extremely important to ensure that all application requirements are met in full. However, if an application is denied -- which is not uncommon -- a person may appeal that ruling.

Because of the financial challenges that those with disabilities often face, it's important that they and their families obtain a solid understanding of the process for being awarded benefits. Social Security disability benefits help many people afford basic necessities while they cannot work.
