How Social Security helps children who are ill

The Social Security Administration has programs geared towards helping individuals and families deal with health issues including mental health issues, injuries and serious illnesses. For children dealing with an illness that is expected to last at least one year or result in death, he or she may qualify for Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, if the family's income is below a certain level.

But even if a child's family's earnings prohibit he or she from collecting SSI benefits, the child may be qualified for Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI benefits. The SSDI benefits qualification is dependent on whether or not the parents or guardian of the child qualifies for the program, and is not based on a family's income level.

If you believe your child qualifies you may want to visit the Social Security Administration's website, where you can download valuable resources such as the "SSI Child Disability Starter Kit" and the "Adult Disability Starter Kit" for children over 18 years of age. In addition, their website allows victims to apply online.

It is often very difficult to properly fill out the paperwork and provide all the necessary documentation to assure an accepted application. Seeking out help and advice from a local law firm such as Terry Katz & Associates PC may be helpful. We proudly serve clients in New York City, Long Island, NY, and Nassau County, New York. Although these programs cannot fully pay for medical and living expenses for a victim, the SSD benefits can provide much needed financial assistance and support along the way.
