Social Security Benefits help victims battling cancer

The Social Security Administration has two programs, Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income, which provide financial aid for Americans suffering from disabilities, illnesses, injuries or mental conditions that prevent them from working. The programs were developed not to replace lost income due to the disability, but to help offset some of the costs of living, such as expenses for food and shelter. Cancer can lead to disability.

Cancer is caused when abnormal cells in the body invade other tissues and spread. Through blood and lymph systems, it may spread to other areas of the body. With this in mind, it is essential that you take proactive action to prevent cancer from forming or detect it as soon as possible. The earlier cancer is detected the higher your chance of overcoming and surviving the disease.

Screening, such as for cervical or colorectal cancers, can detect lesions and address them before they even become cancer. Other screening techniques, such as mammograms, can detect breast cancer. The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers free or inexpensive mammograms and Pap tests throughout the country.

Healthy life choices may also help prevent cancer from forming. Tobacco, alcohol and excessive tanning are all known to cause cancer. In addition, maintaining a healthy weight and active lifestyle, combined with a healthy diet containing many fruits and vegetables, can all help prevent cancer.

Regardless how healthy you live your life, cancer may still form. The Social Security Disability benefits program can help if you or a family member is suffering from cancer. It may be wise to get more information about these benefits, especially if cancer or another disabling disease is preventing you from filling out the necessary paperwork and following the procedures required to receive SSDI benefits.
