What mental conditions are eligible for SSDI benefits?

Being sick or injured to the point where you are disabled and cannot continue working can be devastating and frightening. Not only can you be worried about your condition, but you could also be very worried about how you will take care of yourself and your family without a regular paycheck. Social Security disability benefits can be essential to people in this position.

Often, people only think about physical injuries when it comes to qualifying conditions. However, a number of mental disorders can also be covered. If you or a loved one are suffering from certain mental illnesses, which we will discuss in this post, SSDI benefits could be available to help you cover some of the expenses stemming from medical care and lost wages.

According to the U.S. Social Security Administration, qualifying mental conditions include:

  • Schizophrenia
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Depression
  • Intellectual disabilities
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder
  • Personality disorders
  • Substance addiction that affects the central nervous system
  • Austism

There are many other conditions that could make a person eligible for SSDI, but these are some of the most common mental illnesses from which recipients suffer.

People should be aware, however, that there are a number of criteria that must be met for a person experiencing these and other mental impairments to be eligible for benefits. As is the case with physical injuries, mental illnesses must be disabling to qualify for SSDI benefits. You will need medical records and proof that the condition prevents you from working.

Applying for SSDI benefits can be complicated, frustrating and stressful, which can be even more troubling for people suffering from a serious illness or injury. Working through the process with the guidance of an attorney can give people a great sense of relief and support.
