Report on SSDI shows 'mental disorder' is most common condition

Millions of people in this country live with debilitating mental conditions. As many people in New York know, however, mental conditions are not always very visible. It is often difficult to see that a person lives with serious depression or has a diagnosed psychotic disorder. Because of this, some people who live with mental conditions may think it is difficult to obtain Social Security disability benefits. A recent study showed, however, that "mental disorder" is the most common condition for recipients of federal disability benefits.

According to the Annual Statistical Report on the Social Security Disability Insurance Program, 35.5 percent of people who receive disability benefits do so because of a mental condition. As of December 2012, a total of more than 10 million people nationwide were receiving disability benefits.

According to the study, mood disorders were the most common type of mental conditions among Social Security disability recipients. Mood disorders are generally characterized by multiple symptoms including sleep problems, appetite disturbance, weight fluctuation, drop in energy, and feelings of worthlessness among others. In order to receive benefits for such a condition, a person must be no longer able to work their current job or any other job because of their condition.

Hopefully this information will put to rest any uneasiness New York residents may have had about their ability to obtain disability benefits for mental conditions. Everyone deserves financial help when they struggle with a disability that leaves them unable to work. Fortunately, the Social Security Disability Insurance program allows many people to get the help they need.
