More children being diagnosed with ADHD

According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of children that are being diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is rising. A recent study found that 11 percent of children in the United States have been diagnosed with ADHD.

Although this disorder isn't life-threatening, it can certainly cause difficulties for a young person. Sometimes ADHD has very severe cases in which it is hard for a child to interact in a normal New York school or social environment. Medication and speaking with specialists might be able to help, but this all comes at a cost. A child with severe ADHD might be able to receive Social Security benefits in order to help pay for the costs of treatments.

The latest report outlining the increase in ADHD diagnoses might be the result of more accurate diagnoses. By comparison, only 7.3 percent of children were diagnosed with ADHD in 2003.

This condition is very common in children, and many times affects boys more than girls. After a diagnosis for a chronic condition, an experienced Social Security disability attorney can help a family evaluate their options. If they may qualify for benefits, an attorney can assist them in the application process and ensure it is file properly the first time. This can help avoid a denial of benefits because of an administrative error.

Various chronic conditions might require a person to seek extra medical care, which can be extremely expenses. Some of these conditions might also allow a person to apply for Social Security benefits.
