People with disabilities continue to face high unemployment rates

Many people in New York know how challenging living with a disability can be. Not only do you have to find a way to live comfortable in a world tailored for people without disabilities, you also have to find a way to make a living that can pay for the doctor's visits, therapy, prescription medication and other items you need to manage your disability. Unfortunately, finding a job when you have a disability is not always easy. And recent numbers show that an increasing number of people are having a hard time finding employment.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the unemployment rate for people who have disabilities hit 13.6 percent last month -- a 0.7 percent jump from April. The general population, on the other hand, recorded just a 0.1 percent increase.

Although the government began recording the unemployment rates of people with disabilities in February 2009, there is not enough data yet to determine what kind of trends might exist at different times of the year. Because of this, jobless rates are not adjusted as they are for the general population.

Unfortunately, it is not clear at this time why the unemployment rate grew so much for people with disabilities. There is no doubt, however, that finding a job can be difficult, especially when an employer will have to make even minor adjustments in the way things are done. Fortunately, when it becomes impossible to find a job, Social Security disability is an option. While it won't pay as well as a job would, it does provide individuals who cannot work the financial support they need to make ends meet.
