SSA expands Compassionate Allowances program

Last week we discussed the large backlog of Social Security disability claims that will still be waiting for review at the end of the year. Today, however, we have better news to share with our readers. Last week, the Social Security Administration announced that it will be expanding its Compassionate Allowances program.

This is welcome news for those in New York who suffer from debilitating diseases that weren't formally on the list. The Compassionate Allowances program is a list of conditions that are fast-tracked for approval for Social Security disability benefits. The program has added 35 diseases and conditions to the list that is now 200 long.

Some of the conditions include Lou Gehrig's disease, several types of cancer and early-onset Alzheimer's. Because a normal claims process can take nearly a year to be complete, the SSA created the Compassionate Allowances program to ensure that those with conditions that clearly warrant disability benefits get them as quickly as possible. Many are approved within 15 days.

As the SSA continues to expand their Compassionate Allowances program, hopefully it will give those in New York who have been diagnosed with a life-changing disease or condition some hope that they will get the benefits they need to help cover their medical costs. Those who are concerned about the application process may find it helpful to speak with an experienced Social Security disability attorney. Those who suffer from serious diseases should not have to suffer from financial hardship as well.
