New York Social Security disability applications grow

Readers in New York may be interested to discover that, in June of this year, there were a total of 10,798,686 people receiving Social Security disability insurance benefits. This number includes not only those who are disabled and can no longer work, but also some spouses and children of disabled workers. Each of these people found that they were in need of Social Security disability benefits to assist them with their living expenses and successfully obtained the benefits.

The number of those applying for and receiving benefits from the Social Security disability program has increased in recent years, as the economy has faltered. This is likely due, in part, to the difficulty some people have in finding a job during tough economic times. In New York and elsewhere, obtaining employment can be even more challenging for those who are disabled.

To qualify for Social Security disability benefits, a person must have suffered an injury or illness that makes it impossible for him or her to return to normal work. In addition, the illness or injury must either be expected to last longer than one year or result in death. Spouses and children of the disabled workers have additional criteria for acceptance into the program.

Regardless of the reasons that more people are applying for Social Security disability insurance benefits, it is certain that many, if not all, of those applicants have suffered a life-changing injury or illness that has forced them out of the workforce. In difficult times, it can be hard for someone with such an injury or illness to obtain alternative employment and become self-sufficient again. The SSDI program was intended to help those in need while they work to return to gainful employment.

This seems to be the trend across the country. As the economy is getting worse and people are having a hard time finding a job, they are resorting to filing a disability claim due to various mental illnesses.
