Social Security disability claims on the rise

Many New York residents are struggling in these economic times. Even as the economy begins to improve, many continue to suffer from joblessness. Unfortunately, some may find themselves unable to ever work again as a result of a disability that they suffer from. In these cases, Social Security disability provides an important means of income.

Lately, Social Security disability claims have been soaring to all-time highs. In January, the federal government was sending checks to more than 10 million people at a cost of $200 billion on an annual basis. The numbers mean that 5.3 percent of adults age 25 to 64 are now collecting disability checks. Prior to the economic crisis, only 4.5 percent were collecting the checks.

The increase could be indicative of any number of things. For one, it may be that with unemployment still high, it's even more difficult than before for those who have disabilities to find work. Or perhaps disabilities or illnesses have become worse during the time a person has been unable to work. No matter the reason, there are specific processes in place to ensure that only those who are eligible for Social Security disability under federal law receive the checks.

Without Social Security disability, some New York residents may not be able to pay for the basic necessities of life. However, with the checks, they are able to put a roof over their heads and food on their tables. When applying to receive the disability checks, it may be helpful to review the applicable law or consult with a legal professional.
